These captivating colors will dominate home design in 2022

As we look ahead to the new year, industry experts are already forecasting the hottest hues that we’ll see popping up in home decor and design in 2022. These trending colors are going to step away from the gray and the greige of previous years and instead usher in a new palette that is infused with color. From gorgeous jewel tones and sultry shades to modern neutrals and earthy tones, the standout colors of 2022 will inspire feelings of calm, serenity, and connection to nature

However, these color trends are about more than just evolving our current style. Design experts agree that moving into 2022, it’s all about color psychology and the feelings we want to bring into our home based on the colors we use to decorate.

What the trending colors will be in 2022

After the past two years have required us to spend so much time at home, 2022 will be about transforming our spaces and renewing our connections to our homes, and that starts with the color.

“2022 is all about greens and pinks in a way you’ve never seen them before. Think more deep, jewel-toned greens and rooted, terra-cotta pinks,” said Abbey Hunter of M+A Architects Interior Designer. Whether these colors are working together as a pair or as stand-alone shades, you’ll see plenty of furniture, wall decor, rugs, and paint inspired by this dynamic color duo.

According to Hunter, in 2022 we’ll be drawn to these colors not just because they’re trendy but because of the psychology of colors. “These hues of green are soothing and signal safety to the brain, while the deep pinks in muted palettes radiate warmth and comfort, all meeting the basic needs we are starving for post-pandemic,” she explained.

As we move into this new year, trending colors will reflect our connection to making our home a place of serenity and signal that we are ready for peace and growth.

We can also expect to see a variety of accent colors in the trending palette of 2022. “I think we’re going to see colorful, earthy tones making a comeback — but paired in new and interesting ways,” said Angela Deniston, the strategic interior design advisor at Real Estate Bees. Think “green-gray with deep aubergine, dusty pink and orange monotone palettes, or vintage yellow with navy accents and copper fixtures.”

The color landscape for 2022 is shaping up to be gorgeous.

How you can incorporate these colors into your home

Now that you’ve seen the rich and gorgeous colors that will start popping up everywhere in 2022, you may be feeling inspired to bring this fabulous color palette into your home.

Start small

You don’t need to make any big changes right away. “A great way to incorporate a color trend is to switch out decorative accents, such as pillows, rugs, and art,” Deniston said.

These small details will make a big impact in a room, but they also will give you the freedom to make subtle changes, add more color if needed, and live with this new color to see if it works in your space. Plus, changing out a few decorative accents is far more budget-friendly than a complete redesign.

Paint the walls

If you are ready for a complete room transformation, Deniston says changing your wall color should be at the top of your home design to-do list.

“Another way that can make a big impact is painting your walls — explore colors such as Sherwin-Williams’ 2022 color of the year, Evergreen Fog,” she said. The new year is all about a fresh start, and so is this soothing and subtle color. The gorgeous green is described as when green meets gray and pulls touches of blue. This hue would be lovely in a living room, kitchen, or bedroom.

If you want to make a subtle but bold statement throughout your home, swap out your gold and silver hardware for burnished brass, bronze, or copper.

The trending colors of 2022 have just as much to do with the psychology of color as with evolving style. Experts agree that after a very tumultuous two years filled with uncertainty, the color palette of 2022 represents our need for calm and peace in our homes.

Since the colors you surround yourself with can directly affect your mood, the new year is the perfect time to embrace these trending colors and make some major changes to your decor. As we continue to spend more time in our homes working, entertaining, and relaxing, choosing shades that will help you feel serene and connected to nature can be a mood booster and keep your home looking chic and stylish.
